About Me
- Name: Shira Salamone
Once upon a time, I belonged to a left-wing egalitarian Conservative synagogue, where I was one of a number of women who wore a tallit—and one of the few members who used an Orthodox prayer book (adding the Mothers, of course). Having moved since then, I now belong to a right-wing traditional Conservative synagogue, where I’m almost always the only woman wearing a tallit—and one of the few members who adds the Mothers. I seem destined to be forever . . . on the fringe.

This is yet another one of my (in)famous "hidden" posts, published in the comments so that my co-workers won't be able to see, since they'd have to click. It was actually published on Thursday, September 17, 2009.

So much for planning :(
Ideally, I'd like to work until I'm 70, in order to collect the maximum Social Security monthly retirement benefit payments. The next best option would be to work until I'm 66, when I'll be eligible for full Social Security payments. At the very least, I certainly hope to be able to work until I'm 62, when I'll be eligible for minimum Social Security.
I don't know what options I'll have, though. For openers, the economy has done a number on the financial situation of the organization for which I work, so there's always the possibly that I'll be bumped back from full-time permanent employee to freelance temp., or laid off altogether. For closers, I recently heard from a co-worker, who got the information from a reliable source, that my boss plans to retire in 2012. I'll be barely old enough for minimum Social Security at that point. So my future employment is dependent not only on the economy, but also on whether my future boss wishes to retain me as a full-time employee, a freelance temp., or not at all. All I can do is hope for the best.
As if it isn't bad enough, heading into Rosh HaShanah and having to face the phrase ". . . who will live and who will die . . . " for the first time since my mother's death.

I feel the same way, Shira. I lost my mom this last year, and if S'lichot is any indication, I'm gonna be a wreck throughout the holidays.
L'Shanah Tovah!
Shanah Tovah to you, too, Tevel, and I hope we both have a better year next year.
I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, Shira. I wish you a Shanah Tovah u'Metukah in which things work out for you and the Hubster. May God comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. And, on a more positive front, have a Chag Sameach!
P.S. I would like to get together with you, but I think it will have to wait until after the holidays. So I hope to be in touch in about a month :)
Katrina, thank you for your kind thoughts.
A get-together after the Yamim Yovim/holidays sounds like a delightful idea. I look forward to hearing from you.
